Iran to export food to Russia via Caspian corridor

Tehran is planning to boost exports of agricultural products to Russia though the Caspian Sea.

Russia's trade envoy to Iran says Tehran is planning to boost exports of agricultural products to Russia using a new transit corridor though the Caspian region.

"Iran is eager to increase its food exports to Russia and is thus planning to open a new transit corridor through the Caspian region," Andrei Lugansky told RIA Novosti on Friday.

"Iran wants to supply fish, shrimp, chicken, vegetables and fruits, including apples, to all Russian food retail chains," the official added.

Iran is already delivering fish to Russia, after the countries agreed on a respective protocol on fish deliveries.

In late March, Russia’s agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor said that Russia is likely to start imports of cheese and hatching eggs from Iran by mid-2015.

Moscow and Tehran intensified their agricultural cooperation after Russia adopted a year-long ban on a range of agricultural produce from countries that had sanctioned it over Ukraine crisis in 2014.

Russia and Iran are also maintaining ties in the fields of energy, industry, transportation and military cooperation.

On Saturday, Russia’s Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said his country is interested in entering the Iranian market once the US-engineered sanctions are lifted against the country.

Manturov emphasized that Russia is willing to take a bigger share of the Iranian market in particular in sectors such as automobiles, aircraft as well as the shipbuilding industries.
